Report Summaries
On August 16, a ranger responded to a bicycle accident that occurred in Windy Hill Open Space Preserve on the Spring Ridge Trail. The cyclist was able to walk to the top of the trail and was awaiting a ride when the ranger arrived and conducted a primary injury assessment. The patient declined medical services and was transported to the hospital by their spouse.
On August 17, a ranger attempted to detain two subjects whose dogs were prohibited on the Spring Ridge Trail in Windy Hill Open Space Preserve due to the temporary dog closure for aggressive coyote behavior. The subjects refused to identify themselves or stop. After multiple attempts to detain them, the ranger disengaged the contact, and the subjects left the preserve.
On August 20, an active fire off of District lands threatened Cloverdale Ranch Open Space Preserve, south of Wilbur' s Watch Parking Area. A ranger responded to assist in fire suppression and prevent the fire from spreading to District lands. The fire burned 3.25 acres but was contained to the Caltrans right- of-way and Peninsula Open Space Trust lands.
On August 25, a ranger responded to an injured hiker who had fallen on the Wildcat Loop Trail in Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve. The ranger located the patient and transported her to Santa Clara County paramedics, who were staged in the preserve. The patient was evaluated and released.
On August 28 and 29, rangers along with Search and Rescue teams from Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, conducted a search for a missing person at Skyline Ridge, Long Ridge, and other surrounding Open Space Preserves. The missing person was reported to rangers at approximately 5:40 p.m. on August 28. Rangers began a hasty search of the nearby roads and trails, and the Santa Clara County Sheriff’ s Office was notified since the person’s last known location and destination was in Santa Clara County. The search, involving volunteers, dogs and rangers, continued through the night until 5:00 a.m. on August 29. Around 7:30 a.m., rangers reconvened with search and rescue crews. The search and rescue teams were released when the person was confirmed to no longer be in the area and was declared a missing person. A ranger already responding to a shelter in Santa Cruz, where the subject was reportedly dropped off but never checked in, located the missing person at the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 1 and waited with them until the person’s family arrived to pick them up.
On August 28, during the search for a missing person, a ranger on motorcycle observed a man entering Long Ridge Open Space Preserve off-trail with a gallon of dirty water. The man stated he was going to water his marijuana plant. The ranger took the person’ s information and issued a warning for illegal cultivation. On August 29, rangers discovered and removed three plant pots with small marijuana plants in the same area.
On August 31, a visitor suffered a non-injury hiking accident in Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. A ranger on foot patrol found the visitor who was showing signs of possible dehydration and exhaustion. Rangers provided initial care and transported the visitor to San Mateo County Fire Department personnel at the North Ridge Parking Area. The visitor’ s condition worsened, and they began to vomit. Fire personnel treated the visitor and transported them to the hospital by ground ambulance.
On August 31, a ranger responded to a visitor who fell on the Lower Meadow Trail in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The visitor injured their right knee and was unable to walk. The visitor was transported to the hospital by Santa Clara County Emergency Medical Services. All units cleared the scene at approximately 12:25 p.m.
On August 31, a ranger responded to a bicycle accident at the intersection of Foothill Expressway and Stevens Creek Road. The bicyclist complained of back pain and was transported to the hospital by Santa Clara County Emergency Medical Services.
