Report Summaries
On February 10, a ranger observed two smoking violations on the Mount Umunhum summit in Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. Two subjects were stopped, and one subject had warrants of $50,000 and $15,000. During the encounter, the subjects fled in their vehicle. Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Deputy and Los Gatos Police Officers responded and apprehended the subjects off Midpen lands on Hicks Road near Shannon Road. The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Deputy arrested the subject with warrants.
On February 11, a ranger responded to a bicycle accident on the Coyote Ridge Trail in Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. Santa Clara County Fire Department responded and another ranger transported fire personnel to the scene. The patient was evaluated, signed an Against Medical Advice form with fire personnel, and left the preserve in a personal vehicle.
On February 12, while driving a marked patrol truck on Highway 84, approximately 0.5 miles east of Stage Road, a ranger noticed a disabled vehicle on the side of the road and an individual throwing garbage towards Tunitas Creek Open Space Preserve. Upon further investigation, the ranger discovered the vehicle was involved in a non-injury accident, and the discarded items were empty alcohol containers. California Highway Patrol (CHP) was contacted for assistance. CHP conducted an investigation and field sobriety tests on the driver before arresting him for suspicion of driving under the influence.
On February 17, a ranger discovered reptile cover boards off of the Tree Farm Trail at Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve. The ranger confirmed the boards were not permitted, documented, and removed them. Unpermitted cover boards are often used by reptile and amphibian poachers.
On February 17, a visitor was found locked out of their vehicle in the El Corte de Madera Creek Parking Area. The rangers a truck to wait in while the San Mateo County Fire Department unlocked the vehicle. The visitor was able to drive the vehicle from the scene.
On February 19, rangers received a report of possible motorcycle use in Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. Rangers located and cited two suspects. The riders parked their truck on Skyline Road and were contacted and cited near the lower entrance. The citing ranger provided a courtesy transport to the driver of the truck back up to Skyline Road to retrieve the vehicle and then return to the lower access to pick up the bikes and other rider.
On February 24, a solo bicyclist lost control of his bike and sustained injuries, including loss of consciousness, while riding on Page Mill Road. Medical care was rendered by rangers and the Palo Alto Fire Department, who transported the patient to the hospital via ground ambulance.
On February 25, rangers, CalFire, San Mateo County Fire Department, and Stanford Life Flight responded to a report of a hiker injured by a fall in Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve. When rangers arrived on scene, a good Samaritan was performing CPR on a unresponsive patient. Rangers assisted with patient care until relieved by fire personnel. The patient was declared deceased on the scene by a Life Flight paramedic due to a medical emergency.
