Report Summaries
On June 2, rangers discovered five spent shell casings from a .22 rimfire firearm in the Bald Mountain Parking lot of Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. The shell casings were collected and the discovery was documented in a report.
On June 4, a 911 call was placed from Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve for a medical issue. Midpen rangers and the San Mateo County Fire Department responded and determined that there was no medical emergency, just a tired hiker. Rangers provided transportation for the visitor back to their vehicle.
On June 5, a ranger found a vehicle that tried to spin a donut and collided with a split rail fence in the Monte Bello Open Space Preserve parking lot. The ranger contacted the registered owner, who was enroute with the juvenile driver of the vehicle to provide information about the accident. There were no injuries and the vehicle was towed off Midpen land. The juvenile driver’s father provided his contact and insurance information for follow up regarding the repair to Midpen property.
On June 16, a medical emergency occurred involving an infant in Rancho San Antonio County Park. Santa Clara County Fire Department personnel responded and the infant was transported by ambulance to the hospital.
On June 20, an auto burglary occurred at Rancho San Antonio County Park Parking Lot 4. Twenty dollars in cash was stolen from the victim' s vehicle which was undamaged. The victim declined to file a report with the Santa Clara County Sheriff' s Office.
On June 20, a visitor emailed the District to report they damaged District property with their vehicle the previous day at the Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve parking lot. The ranger contacted the driver of the vehicle who admitted to hitting and damaging a split- rail fence and provided insurance information. The driver stated they attempted to call Midpen at the time of the accident but did not reach anyone. The ranger documented the damage and filed an incident report.
On June 21, a hiker experienced a medical emergency on the Coyote Trail at Rancho San Antonio Park and Open Space Preserve. Another hiker found the hiker on the side of the trail unconscious but still breathing, called 9-1-1, and revived the victim by pouring water on them. Santa Clara County Fire Department personnel responded, examined the patient, carried them off the trail in a wheeled stretcher, and transported the patient to hospital by ambulance.
On June 23, an attempted auto burglary occurred in Rancho San Antonio County Park. A witness saw a person inside the victim' s vehicle and asked the person if it was their car to which the person answered yes. The witness then told the person in the car that it was their friend' s car and that they were calling the police. The suspect then got into a car next to the victim’ s car and left. Rangers were advised and checked the parking lots for any persons fitting the description of the suspects but did not locate anyone. Santa Clara County Sheriff’ s Office did not have any deputies available to respond. The victim filed a report with the Sheriff' s Office.
On June 23, a bike accident occurred on the Blue Blossom Trail in El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve. A ranger was first on scene with the patient who had difficulty breathing and the inability to move their right arm normally. San Mateo County Fire Department arrived and took over care. They carried the patient in a wheeled stretcher up to the Springboard Trail where a rescue engine transported the patient to a waiting ambulance in the parking lot and transported them to the hospital.
On June 24, rangers discovered a significant encroachment into Miramontes Ridge Open Space Preserve. The access to the encroachment was from an adjacent private property. Multiple eucalyptus trees were removed, and multiple road cuts were made into the preserve. Rangers documented the damage in an incident report. During follow up interviews with the property owners by Real Property staff and Rangers the property owners have admitted to doing the work without consulting with the District. Rangers are consulting with Real Property and legal staff on possible mitigation and/or prosecution.
On June 25, a ranger observed a dog off-leash in Thornewood Open Space Preserve and found a subject with a metal mace ( weapon) approximately two feet long next to them. When the ranger asked for identification, the subject grabbed the weapon and fled. The ranger followed at a safe distance and requested backup. The subject then stopped and provided their identification verbally to the ranger before walking away again and advised the ranger they had medical issues. The ranger decided to disengage, gave the subject a verbal warning and released them to avoid risk of a confrontation with a subject with a weapon.
On June 25, rangers investigated an abandoned motorbike in El Sereno Open Space Preserve after receiving multiple reports. Rangers confirmed the registered owner' s information, issued a parking citation, and attempted to contact the owner without success.
On June 27, rangers received a call for a vegetation fire in Foothills Open Space Preserve that was caused by a vehicle accident on Page Mill Road. The City of Palo Alto Park Rangers extinguished the fire and the Palo Alto Fire Department performed mop- up operations while District rangers handled traffic control until they were relieved by fire personnel.
On June 28, a ranger responded to a visitor who experienced heat- related illness on the High Meadow Trail in Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve. A ranger assessed the patient and transported them to the service road where the Santa Clara County Fire Department was waiting. The patient was evaluated by fire personnel and was released to family against medical advice.
On June 28, a ranger responded to a driver who was under the influence and struck the center bollard of gate SA06 on Mount Umunhum Road. San Jose Fire Department and California Highway Patrol ( CHP) responded. The driver was transported to the hospital by ground ambulance while in CHP custody.
On June 28, a ranger discovered a dumping of waste violation at gate RS09 at Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve. Photos were taken to document the violation and the material was removed and disposed.
On June 28, rangers responded to a stolen and abandoned vehicle at Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve with Santa Clara County Sheriff Office' s Deputies. Both agencies met at the driveway of Bear Creek Stables to interview witnesses, gather evidence, and meet the registered owner. The owner returned on June 29 and had the vehicle towed.
On June 29, rangers responded to a medical call for a visitor who had fallen over on the Chestnut Trail in Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve. City of Palo Alto Park Rangers and the Palo Alto Fire Department provided medical care while rangers handled traffic control. The patient was transported to the hospital by air ambulance.
