Report Summaries
On May 6, a ranger was injured by a loose dog on Page Mill Road. The dog nipped at the ranger's right calf breaking the skin. The ranger cleaned the wound and the dog was not captured.
On May 8, a deceased adult male with a single gunshot wound to the head was found by a visitor on the Sierra Morena Trail in El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve. Rangers, San Mateo County Fire Department, San Mateo County Sheriff' s Office Deputies, and a San Mateo County Coroner responded to secure and investigate the scene. Rangers closed the trail, helped extricate the body, and gathered information for their report.
On May 10, a ranger continued investigation of illegal coverboards at Windy Hill Open Space Preserve. The ranger checked a trail camera and found the same individual who was previously photographed checking the boards. Rangers will continue surveillance of the site to attempt to catch the individual responsible.
Rangers based out of the Skyline Field Office are busy brushing tall and thick grass around signs, gates, and trailheads due to the high level of rainfall experienced this year.
On May 11, a ranger responded to a vehicle accident that occurred on Mount Umunhum Road in Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. The ranger discovered a vehicle off the pavement with the occupants standing outside of it. California Highway Patrol was requested and responded to tow the vehicle.
On May 12, a ranger responded to a non-injury vehicle accident on Mount Umunhum Road in Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. There was no damage to Midpen land, the vehicle was removed by a tow truck, and the driver was warned for violations.
On May 13, the Palo Alto Fire Department requested a mutual aid response for a vehicle accident on Page Mill Road. A ranger responded and provided traffic control. The patient was treated and transported to the hospital by ground ambulance.
On May 13 and 14, a ranger provided “ Beyond the Bloom” interpretation on wildflowers at Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve.
On May 16 and 18, rangers attended NARCAN ( naloxone) training online led by Midpen’ s Training and Safety Coordinator. Rangers will now be equipped with NARCAN in the event they encounter a potential opioid overdose.
On May 21, a mountain bike rider crashed and lost consciousness in El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve. Kings Mountain Fire Department treated and transported the patient to the hospital.
On May 21, a ranger responded to a hiking accident on the High Meadow Trail at Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. Santa Clara County Fire Department responded, and one patient was transported to the hospital by ground ambulance.
On May 22, a ranger responded to an ill person at the restrooms in Rancho San Antonio San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The patient was ill after consuming an unknown amount of alcohol and was unable to care for themself. The patient was transported by ground ambulance to hospital.
On May 24, a ranger responded to a vehicle accident on Highway 35 in San Mateo County. The ranger provided medical care to two patients until the San Mateo County Fire Department arrived to take over care. Both patients refused to be transported to the hospital.
On May 28, a vehicle struck a large rock on Highway 9. CalFire was first on scene and requested assistance from a ranger with traffic control. No injuries were reported and the ranger assisted a California Highway Patrol officer with traffic control for approximately one hour.
On May 27, a ranger discovered twelve illegal cover boards present in Coal Creek Open Space Preserve. Coverboards are used to lure reptiles and amphibians for research, or in this case, potential poaching. The boards were documented and follow- up will be necessary.
On May 28, a misdemeanor animal harassment violation occurred in Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve. A turkey chick was taken from the Mindego Hill Trail on the belief that its mother was unable to care for it. The person brought the turkey chick to Palo Alto rangers at Palo Alto Foothills Preserve. The turkey chick was reunited with its mother and a Midpen ranger contacted the person by phone.
On May 31, a ranger responded to a bicycle accident on the Coyote Ridge Trail in Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. One patient with a chief complaint of pain to the wrist was located, assessed, and transported to the Prospect Road parking lot where the Santa Clara County Fire Department took over patient care. The patient was transported by ground ambulance to the hospital.
On May 31, a ranger responded to a visitor who suffered a diabetic emergency requiring assistance on the Novitiate Trail in St Joseph’ s Hill Open Space Preserve and evaluated by Santa Clara County paramedics. The ranger transported the patient to an ambulance and the patient was transported to the hospital.
